Over the past century, the space and time of labor has undergone fundamental changes due to many technological, economic, societal and other developments. This seminar will focus on the origins and current trajectories for the space of work, with particular attention to the future of the office as an architectural type but related looks at the construction of other types of productivity. We will read some history of the workspace and consider recent developments of things like free-trade zones, co-working spaces, tele-working, globally outsourced and distributed workforces and what their architectural consequences look like and might become.
