This 3-credit seminar will explore the ethical positions that are manifest in the design and use of
the built environment. We will begin with the questions that preoccupied moral philosophers in
modern times and then explore how architects, critics, and researchers apply ethical
considerations in the practice of their respective disciplines. The range of positions covered by
this course will be broad, ranging from the social categories of gender, race and class to the
application of technology and environmental justice. Through readings, discussions,
presentations and written exercises, participants will explore the scope of ethical issues raised
through the production and use of space.
